Indigenous Knowledge
Among the Anishinaabe people, the health of the land and the health of the community are thought to be synonymous, nurtured through relationships to the land which provides a healthy basis for culture, kinship systems, traditional ways of living, and overall well-being – or biimadiziwiin, as it is referred to in the Anishinaabe language.
This relationship is based on a deep spiritual relatedness between people and the land, that which has been sustained for generations through Indigenous knowledge. Indigenous Knowledge refers to the cultural traditions, values, and belief systems that have enabled many generations of First Nation people to practice nourishing, healthful relationships with the land, for example in the form of food and medicines, plants and animals.
